How to fill in a Yahtzee score sheet

A Yahtzee score sheet has 13 boxes split into two sections. Each turn you roll up to three times, then you must write a score in one empty box, even if that score is 0. After 13 turns every box is full, and the highest grand total wins.

Upper section: Aces through Sixes

In each upper box, add up only the dice showing that number. Rolling 4-4-4-2-6 is worth 12 in Fours, 6 in Sixes or 2 in Twos.

If the six upper boxes add up to 63 or more, you get a 35-point bonus. 63 is what you get with three of each number (3 + 6 + 9 + 12 + 15 + 18), so being ahead in Fives and Sixes makes up for coming up short on Aces. The sheet above shows how many points you still need for the bonus.

Lower section: combinations

The lower section scores poker-style combinations. Some score the total of all five dice, and some score a fixed number of points:

Scratching a box

If your roll doesn't fit anywhere useful, you still have to fill a box. Putting a 0 in a box is called scratching it. Most players scratch Aces or the Yahtzee box late in the game, since those cost the fewest points. Tap any box and pick 0 to scratch it.

Yahtzee bonus and the Joker rule

If you've already scored 50 in the Yahtzee box and roll another Yahtzee, you earn a 100-point Yahtzee bonus, and you still fill a box with that roll. Use the Yahtzee bonus row on the score card to add each one. Where that roll goes is set by the Joker rule, explained in full on the Yahtzee rules page. If you scratched the Yahtzee box with a 0, later Yahtzees don't earn the bonus.

Example: Sam's upper section adds to 65, so Sam gets the 35 bonus for an upper total of 100. The lower section scores 25 + 30 + 40 + 50 + 22 (Chance) + 18 (3 of a kind) + 0 (scratched 4 of a kind) = 185. One bonus Yahtzee adds 100. Grand total: 100 + 185 + 100 = 385.

What's a good Yahtzee score?

Most casual games end between 180 and 250. Getting the upper bonus and at least one Yahtzee usually pushes you past 250. A perfect game with no bonus Yahtzees is 375, and the highest score possible is 1,575: thirteen Yahtzees in a row.
